This TR-8S sound-bank label refers to DR220 material without an A or E suffix.
A sound-bank label, not a new machine
DR220 is the name attached to a TR-8S bank. It belongs in the Museum because it preserves a route by which older rhythm sounds continue to be played, but it is not a third BOSS DR-220 model. The label carries a sound-family hint rather than the full identity of the machine that supplied it.
Two possible source instruments
The documented DR-220 family contains the acoustic-leaning DR-220A and the electronic-sound DR-220E. Their shared 1986 service notes, manual and contemporary coverage establish a genuine pair of instruments, each with its own voice set and operating record. The unsuffixed bank stands beside that pair as an archive trace: useful for listening, but too spare to choose between their different histories.
A bridge into a newer performance instrument
Loaded into a TR-8S, the DR220 name becomes part of a newer rhythm machine’s working palette. It is a small illustration of how drum sounds move across generations: an old family name, a sample bank and a contemporary performance box meeting in one pattern. The Museum preserves that connection while keeping the original A and E instruments visible as their own distinct objects.
