Twelve rhythms, £106

Beat Instrumental’s August 1979 price guide gives the Music Box 12 a firm place in Britain’s musical marketplace: EKO 4002X, twelve rhythms, £106 including VAT. It is a small commercial snapshot, but it makes the machine feel immediate—a named Italian rhythm box offered among the working equipment of the late 1970s.

A small box with a complete job

Twelve named preset choices, tempo and volume controls, an audio output and a footswitch connection make the Music Box 12 easy to picture in use. It was meant to start when the player did, hold the pulse through a tune and leave the main instrument in the foreground.

Dream Box kin

Owner and sampler accounts place the Music Box alongside EKO’s Dream Box instruments. The relation appears in the shared visual language of compact cabinets and preset accompaniment: a family of boxes built to turn a single performer into a fuller arrangement.

A voice that stayed available

The Music Box 12 continues to appear as its own entry in preservation and sample collections. That afterlife matters because it keeps a small analogue rhythm box audible: its sounds leave the original room and become material for another generation of players.
