June 1985 dealer advertising places the two-tom SDS200 in Simmons’ modular 200/400/800 range. Its first shipment date remains unresolved.
Two toms beside the acoustic kit
The SDS200 puts two analogue tom voices behind a pair of pads. Simmons promoted the range for use alone or beside acoustic and electronic drums, making this small system an entry into pad-controlled sound without replacing an entire kit. Its two toms have a distinct role alongside the four-tom SDS400 and mixed-voice SDS800.

A compact brain with a specific job
Reed’s 1985 review describes a controller half the size of the four-voice units. Two channel strips correspond to the two toms. It has no run generator; the pitch-stepping facility belongs to the SDS400 and SDS800.
Two accounts of the outputs
Reed describes two audio outputs on the SDS200. The May 1986 guide lists individual, stereo and mix outputs. Those descriptions disagree, leaving a small but practical question about the rear panel that the original manual or a documented instrument could settle.
Two UK prices
In September 1985 Reed quoted £359.99 including VAT. By May 1986 the British buyer’s guide listed £315. The two prices show the SDS200 at different moments in its early commercial life; neither establishes what every dealer included in the box.
