Jean-Paul Verpeaux reviewed the DD-30 in February 1986; Tony Reed reported RSF’s Frankfurt machines in April.

A French drum machine with a readable panel

Choose a voice, place its hits and set its level within the pattern. The February 1986 review describes twenty-eight 12-bit sampled voices, extending the kit with agogos, shakers, finger-clicks and acoustic and electronic toms.

The sampled kit was meant to be useful

Each pattern could retain individual instrument levels and accents. Ten shared output channels offered mixer access alongside the stereo mix. Some voices were mutually exclusive.

Ninety-six pulses and no graphic safety net

Real-time and step entry could be combined at 96 pulses per quarter note. Correction resolution was selectable by instrument, with swing available. Seven-segment displays and LEDs supplied the feedback rather than a graphic grid.

Memory that travels at cassette speed

Patterns could span one to ninety-nine quarter-note beats. Memory held up to one hundred, with longer patterns reducing that total. Songs retained their patterns’ banks, levels, accents and relative tempos. Cassette saving took two to three minutes; the sockets also supported tape synchronisation.

A French machine built for the wider rig

MIDI supplied clock and dynamic keyboard triggering. Four trigger inputs, or five with Click In repurposed, accepted pads or strong audio signals. The external clock could follow 24, 48 or 96 pulses per quarter note.

Lil Crucified identifies “Sellin Kush in Style” as an RSF DD-30 beat on the live Pusher Street Radio release, where each title names the drum machine used for that beat. It is a blunt, useful attribution: one rare machine, one named track, one stated basis for the credit.

The photograph as a control map

The review photograph brings the working surface into view: the DD30 marking, two upper button rows, programming keys below and a large control at the right. The compact panel puts voice selection and pattern entry close together, with LEDs and numeric displays supplying the feedback.

Two period reports, different configurations

At Frankfurt in April 1986, Tony Reed described a DD30 with thirty sounds, user sampling and MIDI disk dumping, priced at roughly £1,350. February’s review had described twenty-eight voices and cassette storage. Those two accounts capture different reported configurations; they do not establish one machine with every feature combined.

A machine named in the track title

Lil Crucified names the DD-30 in “Sellin Kush in Style”, a track on the 2025 Live at Pusher Street Radio release. The accompanying note says each title names the drum machine used for the beat, giving this scarce French instrument a specific place in a contemporary performance.
