Preset rhythm machine

Hammond Auto-Vari 64

Choose a pulse, then choose another way to play it. The Auto-Vari 64 gives an organist sixteen rhythms with four variations apiece, a ready accompaniment that later musicians carried into recording rooms of their own.

Hammond’s history ↗

Hammond dated the Auto-Vari 64 to 1974, placing it firmly in the era when an electronic accompaniment machine could make a keyboard player sound less alone. Its preset rhythms and variations turned a small case of switches into a ready rhythm section.

Hammond Auto-Vari 64 — the rhythm beside the organ

HAMMOND RETROSPECTIVE / 197416 × 4

Rhythm forms and variations, explained without patterns or sound.

Hammond’s retrospective dates the Auto-Vari 64 to 1974 and explains its name: sixteen basic rhythms, each with four variations. The player did not program a drum part from an empty page. Choosing, varying and setting tempo were the performance.

Neutral numbered positions explain Hammond’s documented structure. No label, factory pattern, hardware recreation, or audio is asserted.

An accessory with its own identity

A March 1977 keyboard survey and an August 1979 British £290 price listing are dated market snapshots, not a 1974 launch price or a universal retail figure. The service manual is a different sort of witness: it helps check the physical object and circuits, but its code does not settle a publication date or provide a complete operator guide.

Choosing a pulse

The four variations gave each basic rhythm several alternatives: the musician chose among existing accompaniments rather than entering individual drum notes. Jonas Olesen’s later MIDI, output and pitch alterations are a maker’s intervention, not stock factory features.

A rhythm returns to a recording room

Andy Cabic named the Auto-Vari 64 among equipment used for Vetiver’s The Errant Charm, alongside other keyboards, drum machines and software. That is album-session equipment context, not a named pattern or a claim that the box appears on every track.

One sampled idea was later removed, and the finished track roles remain unassigned; what survives is a better kind of history: the small Hammond box, present in the room while a record was being made.

A rhythm section beside the organ

The Auto-Vari 64 was made for the working world of organ accompaniment: select a dance rhythm, choose a variation and let the machine carry the pulse. Hammond’s history and the contemporary keyboard survey place it in a family of products that made a domestic or stage keyboard setup feel more complete.

What the player bought

A 1979 Beat Instrumental price guide records the Auto-Vari 64 among Hammond accessory products. Its compact format and repeated pattern vocabulary were part of a clear commercial proposition: a player could add accompaniment without needing another musician in the room.

A voice that travelled beyond the organ bench

Andy Cabic discussed using the Auto-Vari 64 in the making of Vetiver’s The Errant Charm, whose 2011 label record supplies the album context. Jonas Olesen’s later MIDI work shows another afterlife for the machine: its original patterns still invited musicians to put them into new environments.
