Preset analogue rhythm machine

Welson Supermatic S12

Automatic rhythm with a place for the player’s hands. Welson’s wood-veneered Supermatic S12 supplies twelve presets, then invites a tom, a clave or a snare roll into the performance through four manual buttons.

The Welson Supermatic S12 is a wood-veneered Italian preset rhythm box with twelve labelled selections, manual percussion triggers and a footswitch input. Its original hardware has inspired sampling and software recreations, while the machine itself continues to appear on new records.

The Musica E Computer credits explicitly list a Welson Supermatic S12 among the equipment used. No track or player allocation is supplied, but the old Italian rhythm machine is part of the record’s documented palette rather than a decorative historical reference.

Lammergeiers / And I Will Wake The Dawn Itself — 8 Track Demo Tapes

Lammergeiers recall making the 2011–12 fragments behind And I Will Wake The Dawn Itself with only a failing Wurlitzer, Juno-6, Yamaha CS5 and an ancient Welson Supermatic rhythm machine to hand.

01 // Accompaniment

A veneer cabinet full of small decisions

The Supermatic S12 is a compact Italian rhythm box with a wood-veneered case, aluminium front panel and twelve labelled preset selections. Start/stop foot control, mono output and rear gain and tone trims give it the practical manners of a domestic accompaniment instrument, built to sit close to a keyboard or guitar amplifier.

02 // Accompaniment

Four buttons for a human hand

Beyond the preset rhythms, four white buttons call up two toms, claves and a held snare roll. Those controls matter because they let a player interrupt the automatic pulse with an action of their own: a roll under the finger, a tom hit at the edge of a bar, a little manual punctuation inside a fixed pattern.

03 // Accompaniment

From hardware to new sound worlds

The S12 has inspired two different kinds of recreation. Rhythmic Robot sampled a hardware machine for a Kontakt instrument, while Digital Systemic Emulations built its own editable software version. Both are tributes to the original’s character, and both make clear how much modern tools can add beyond the fixed hardware. These later recreations do not establish the original hardware’s launch date, which remains unresolved.

04 // Accompaniment

A machine still making records

Lammergeiers describes using a Welson Supermatic in its 2011–12 eight-track sessions. Slow Motion Records later credited the Supermatic S12 among the drum machines used for Rodion & Mammarella’s Musica E Computer. The small box has travelled from preset accompaniment into a wider studio life without losing its distinctive hand-operated charm.
