The Sound Auto-Drummer is a Soviet-era preset digital rhythm machine known through surviving examples and specialist instrument records.
A preset beat under the fingers
The Sound Auto-Drummer puts accompaniment on a small panel of rhythm buttons, a tempo knob and Start/Stop. Audiodrome’s account of the pictured serviced machine describes two banks of thirteen presets and three fills. Its photograph shows named choices including march, disco, rock, waltz and tango: choose a rhythm, set the pace and bring it in.

Fills and hand-played percussion
Three numbered fill buttons sit beside the rhythm choices. A separate blue row marked Hand Control offers Tom 1, Tom 2 and Claps, with level knobs above for those sounds, snare and hi-hat. The seller describes six sampled sounds including a kick. The layout brings preset accompaniment and directly played percussion onto the same working surface.

An instrument with unsettled origins
The English AUTO drummer marking is clear; the factory attribution is not. Audiodrome names Zhitomir Electronic Factory and 1989, while Reverb’s fields label it Estradin, model SOUND, and Made In Russia. Later collector accounts also differ between Ukrainian and Russian descriptions. The surviving machine gives this history a tangible object, but its precise maker, place of manufacture and production date remain unresolved.
